Tomasz Sętowski graduated with an art degree from the Higher Pedagogical University in Częstochowa. However, he claims that his studies only provided him with theoretical preparation for the artist’s career, as he considers himself a self-taught painter.
Since the late 1980s, he has exhibited his works in solo and group exhibitions, initially abroad (Germany and France), later in Poland. In 1991, he became a member of the Polish Artists’ Association (ZPAP). Following his solo debut in Poland (exhibition at the BWA, Częstochowa, 1994), his works were included in the traveling exhibition „Polish Surrealists,” which toured throughout Poland from 1995 to 1997. In 1998, his works caught the attention of the Stricoff Fine Art Ltd. gallery in New York.
Sętowski represents the popular style of Magic Realism. His compositions are typically multi-layered and often depict figures in fantastical, colorful costumes. He frequently uses the „picture-within-a-picture” effect (e.g., by juxtaposing figures of different sizes within a single pictorial space or using Gothic castles and towers as headgears). His figures exhibit graphic-decorative qualities and occasionally calligraphic lines, which lend his works an illustrative character and create the impression of being immersed in a world full of fairytale visions.
