Stanisław Baj, who lives in Warsaw and Dołhobrody, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1972 to 1978 under Professors Bylina, Sienicki, and Maciąg, in whose studio he also received his diploma with honors. He is currently a lecturer at his alma mater. He has participated in numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Mazovian Museum in Płock (1995), the State Art Institute in Moscow (2002), and the galeria aTAK in Warsaw (2011).
Baj is considered one of the most interesting painters in the tradition of Polish realist painting, with a focus on the landscape of Podlasie and its inhabitants. He depicts Polish peasants at their arduous daily work, but also, in large formats, the nostalgic landscapes of the Bug River, mostly with vibrant light and striking colors.
The paintings reflect how I feel and see the Bug River. In painting, I wanted to express how vast and magnificent nature is, and how much humankind should respect it.
Besides the landscape of the Bug River, portraiture is an important subject in the work of Stanisław Baj. In addition to the inhabitants of his home village of Dołhobrody, he primarily depicted neighbors and acquaintances, but most frequently his mother, of whom he created more than three hundred portraits over the course of forty years.
