Between 1963 and 1970, Dwurnik studied painting, graphic arts, and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1970, he completed his studies in the studio of Professor Eugeniusz Eibisch. During his studies, he encountered the work of the self-taught artist Nikifor Krynicki in 1965. Fascinated by Nikifor’s linework, he adopted a similar style (which is called Appropriation Art by art historians) and created his first independent cityscapes alongside his studies.
Edward Dwurnik was an exceptionally prolific artist. His oeuvre includes over 8,000 canvas paintings, including extensive painting cycles, as well as more than 20,000 works on paper. The first works in his monumental series Hitchhikers Through the Skies, depicting cities from a bird’s eye view, date from 1966 and continued until his death in 2018.
