Jan Marcin Szancer, who came from a Jewish family, was an illustrator, stage designer, and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and later in France and Italy.
He was friends with the writer Jan Brzechwa, whose poems he frequently illustrated, as well as over 200 books, including Henryk Sienkiewicz’s trilogy, Adam Mickiewicz’s Pan Tadeusz, and Brzechwa’s Pan Kleks series. In 1938, he became the illustrator of the short-lived children’s weekly magazine Gazetka Miki. From May 1945, Szancer was the editor and cover illustrator of the children’s magazine Świerszczyk. Among his best-known works are the illustrations for the children’s classic Pinocchio, published in Polish in 1950. He was the first artistic director of the Polish radio station Telewizja Polska after World War II.
The so-called Krzywy Domek (crooked house) in Sopot is based on his design.
