Leon Tarasiewicz

Waliły 1957

The artist lives and works in his hometown of Waliły in the Białystok region. Tarasiewicz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, graduating in 1984 under the supervision of Prof. T. Dominik. He debuted in 1984 at the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw. Through his collaboration with Foksal, the artist was able to present his works to a Europe-wide audience. His solo exhibition at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice, in particular, gained the attention of art dealers and collectors from Europe and the USA. In 1988, his works were featured at the Venice Biennale in the Aperto’88 exhibition. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Jana Cybisa Prize and the Nowosielskis Prize.

His early works depict landscapes from which he gradually banished unnecessary elements, thus creating his own personal version of nature. In his recent works, he breaks the formal constraints confined to the canvas frame, often extending his art beyond the edges of the stretcher by painting on walls, columns, and floors. As he himself says: Painting, from its beginnings in the Neolithic, was created on walls, floors, and ceilings.
